Legal & intellectual property
Important information about real-world football names, branding and the Football Legacy project.
Independent football simulation
Football Legacy is an independent, unofficial football career simulation. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by or officially connected with any football club, league, federation, governing body, competition organiser or football award organiser.
Real-world names
Some real-world club, league, competition or geographic names may appear for identification and simulation context. Trade marks and other third-party rights remain the property of their respective owners. Football Legacy does not claim ownership of third-party names or branding.
Official branding
The website should avoid official club crests, league logos, competition logos, player photographs, kits, broadcast graphics and other protected artwork unless permission or a suitable licence has been obtained. The current game primarily uses text names and original interface artwork.
Competition and award names
Some competition or award names may themselves be protected. Before commercialising the game, selling access, running paid promotions or making substantial marketing investment, obtain appropriate intellectual-property advice and consider generic competition names or licensing where needed.
Football Legacy name
Owning footballlegacy.co.uk does not by itself create trade-mark rights. A domain registration and a trade mark are separate things. Before major commercial use, carry out an appropriate trade-mark clearance search for the “Football Legacy” name and logo in relevant classes and territories.
Original material
The site's original interface, original written content, code contributions and original artwork may attract intellectual-property protection. Third-party rights are not transferred to Football Legacy merely because a name appears in the simulation.
Rights-holder concerns
If a rights holder has a concern about material on the website, the issue should be reviewed promptly and the relevant material removed or changed where appropriate. Do not post private legal correspondence publicly.
Before monetisation
Do a separate legal review before adding advertising, sponsorship, paid subscriptions, donations tied to benefits, prizes, merchandise, official-looking club branding, user accounts or user-generated content. Those changes can create obligations that do not exist in the current privacy-minimised static version.
